The three tiers of queer sff:

Broke: what is worldbuilding? Made in a lab to be as blandly inoffensive as possible. Time to randomly namedrope terms like 'nonbinary' and 'ace' while doing zero work actually incorporating them into the world or characters and have someone give a speech about how valid they are. Lines like 'I'm too ace for this' while never exploring the concept of asexuality or aromanticism and still having very central romance plotlines is common. I hate it here learn how to write realistic dialogue and fully realized characters I'm begging.

Woke: more ore less typical sci-fi and fantasy but It’s Queer Now. Might include in-universe queerphobia to be struggled against or may have queer identities be fully normalized. Can be done bad or well depending on the skill of the writer. A good way to explore our contemporary ideas of gender and sexuality or to have a bit of a power fantasy with lesbian princesses and trans knights. There will probably be a bisexual love triangle.

Bespoke: what is a gender. What is monogamy. What is polyamory. What is romance. What is platonic. Time to show you the most fucked up uncategorizable relationship you’ve ever seen. There may be weird ass metaphorical sex

"What we’re seeing now isn’t just a wave of online bullying, but an ideological shift toward the same old brand of authoritarian extremism. These kids have learned to sell out their peers, to subject them to mass moral judgment, and to wield accusations like weapons, all while seeing these actions as necessary for the sake of societal good."

From Fandom and Fascism

This is exactly what we've been saying. This article is so accurate. It addresses the state of fandom, not regarding politics (not directly, though the connection is unavoidable) but focuses on fans' behavior, younger fans especially, and how they're pushing an agenda born into fascist ideology. And press outlets are heavily supporting that, not even because they really believe in it, but because they can make money out of it. When fandom's fascism meets fandom's capitalism, we need to resist harder than ever.

He misplaced his angel. He didn’t hold on hard enough. He got Cas back only to lose him immediately.
-
Cas comes back on a Thursday.
And then keeps coming back on Thursdays. He doesn’t seem to have much choice in the matter, actually. For the rest of the week, he’s stuck in the Empty, and Dean is left trying to figure out how to save him, how to talk to him—and how to get him out for good.

I'll be the first to say that I don't read a lot of fix-it fics, but every so often, there's one that will catch my interest. This fic not only caught my interest, but had me waiting eagerly for every single installation. The writing is gorgeous, and it's a great character study of both Dean and Cas, including the truly insane lengths they'll go to in order to be with each other, as well as how desperately they both want the other.

The premise of this fic is impossible to resist: Cas does manage to escape The Empty, but only on Thursdays. For 24 hours, from midnight to midnight, he's able to come back to earth. The rest of the time, he's still banished to The Empty. Dean has to wait a week between visits; meanwhile, for Cas, it's as though no time has passed at all. Understandably, this causes stress and angst for both of them. On top of this, there's still the matter of Cas' confession hanging over them, as well as the fact that neither of them understands how Cas is breaking out of The Empty, or if he'll continue to be able to do so.

The angst in this fic is sublime--Dean has to deal with his feelings for Cas, all the while handling the ups and downs of Cas appearing and disappearing (the abandonment issues are STRONG here), while trying to figure out a way to keep Cas permanently in reality. The yearning between Dean and Cas is so strong in this fic that it deserves to be its own character. I can also appreciate a fic that allows Cas to be absolutely insane in his desire for Dean, and this fic fulfills that niche to the utmost.

Truly one of the best fix-it fics I've ever had the pleasure of reading! And don't worry, the ending makes all that angst worth it. 💖
